Characters, Critters, & Gizmos: Middle-grade Fall Covers, Day Two

Sometimes a cover's style matters less than what it depicts: a feisty heroine, a cool contraption, or a cantankerous critter. After the break below, you'll  find a bevy of good examples from the new middle-grade fantasies of July-December 2012.

Not that these aren't stylish covers--check out THE SAVAGE FORTRESS for excitement, or THE SEVEN TALES OF TRINKET for sheer class. I love the notion that the push-broom is mightier than the sword in THE SPINDLERS.  I have to say, though, my all-time favorite gizmo has to be THE PECULIAR--can't wait to see what that one's about.

As always, let us know in the comments if we missed one of this season's stunning covers--and link to it so we can see it. Stay tuned for the fall collection of young-adult covers, starting Labor Day!

(Some of them cute as buttons)

Fantastic beasts!

(Some of them a trifle grouchy)

Gears and Gizmos!

(Want. Them.)

The kick-butt heroine is alive and well . . .

As girls seek their fortunes in crystal or spell.

Some flame hot or get cursed by Feys . . .

Or bring us tales from the olden days.

There's an aw-w-w factor with adorable eyes

Or friends so fluffy we're gonna die.

Ellen Booraem is the author of THE UNNAMEABLES, SMALL PERSONS WITH WINGS, and the upcoming TEXTING THE UNDERWORLD (August 2013). She lives in Downeast Maine with an artist, a dog, and a cat, one of whom is a practicing curmudgeon. She's online at www.ellenbooraem.com.

  1. The Cup and the Crown is just gorgeous! I could look at these book covers forever! (And thanks for including Trinket!)

  2. I'm like Lena. Wish I had time to read them all.

  3. And poppy is so ADORABLE! I'm fond of the Spindlers cover, too. Dying to know what she does with the push-broom.

  4. Yummy! I wish I had time to read them all. I especially like the covers that have a bit of a retro feel like Spindlers and The Power of Poppy Pendle.

Have your say...
